Renting a Work/Live Loft vs. Joining a Coworking Space

I'm returning to SF soon. Along the various issues I'm grappling with is what kind of a work/life situation to get into.

I'm deciding between renting a work/live space vs. joining a coworking space.

On the one hand, a good work/live space would be amazing. In the ideal case, I'm imagining a loft in the Mission, Dogpatch, or Potrero Hill. I could craft the space to my desire. I could bring friends together. I could hold events (both technical meetups and non-technical hangouts, like the concert we booked last December). It would be comfortable, it would be convenient, and it would be my own space.

On the other hand, there's a chance that I'll get cabin fever and go crazy. It's healthy to have a separation between home and work, and having to change out of your PJ's in the morning to leave home is a force for good. There are many coworking spaces in SF. Joining one could lead to an increased sense of community, new friendships, and a higher exposure to SF's community (which is the main reason why any of us are here in the first place).

I'm torn. What do you think? Do you have any thoughts favoring one or the other?
